Creating a High-Performance Data/Server Room
27Feb2018
The Burns special projects team recently completed a delicate HVAC upgrade to a fully functional 24/7 clean room data center. Through a clever re-piping and phasing plan we were able to significantly boost system redundancy and efficiency, while keeping the facility online without interruption throughout the retrofit process.
Highlights:
- Pre- and post-project installed cooling capacity remained unchanged, at 180-tons, yet our re-piping strategy led to improving the redundancy characteristics from zero to N+3! This will allow the owner to grow server capacity without spending additional HVAC-related capital.
- Structural upgrades accommodated changes in unit dimensions, while eliminating HVAC-induced vibration
- Keeping the systems fully functional throughout the construction process necessitated extensive planning and a creative rigging plan
