Retrofit Services

It’s predicted that more than 85% of our urban building stock by the year 2030 already exists today. While new, high-end buildings make the best news headlines, the greatest extent of urban building construction is in renovations. Building retrofits are frequently critical projects, under difficult time constraints, that displace employees from familiar environments, creating inconveniences and reduced business effectiveness.

Burns Mechanical specializes in these time- and space-constrained construction environments. We are responsive to the unique pressures that these challenging assignments cause for our clients and other trades.

Case study: Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania

One example is our retrofit of the HVAC, plumbing and medical gas systems serving operating rooms on the fourth floor at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP). The renovation included refurbishing an existing air handler in addition to providing a new air handler dedicated to serving four new operating rooms and support areas. To protect ongoing hospital operations, the HVAC system had to be isolated from occupied areas to the highest level of infection control, Class IV ICRA containment. To ensure time and cost efficient project delivery, the project included the first use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) for a renovation at HUP.
